15% CGI 85% Retouching
Approach
The first task in any job is determining the techniques best suited to both the requirements of the image and the constraints of the job itself. Some can be accomplished entirely in CGI, others with photography and retouching, and others still require all of the above. When tasked with creating this image of football players in a stadium tunnel, it was clear from the start that the job would rely heavily on retouching with CGI playing a supporting roll.

Process
While photography could have been used for the actual tunnel, CGI allowed us to create exactly the desired look - a long dark tunnel, lit from the end with just the right amount of grit, grime and greeble. Through extensive retouching, stock photography was transformed and combined from individual daylight shots of players on the field into a cohesive group, matching the dark, back-lit environment of the tunnel. For a better look at the process, the video to the right shows, piece by piece, how the final image came together

Result
By drawing upon several techniques, we were able to create a single, seamless, dramatic image from very disparate, individual elements. A purpose built CGI stadium tunnel created the environment to be filled with photographic players, while extensive retouching was used to match the mood, composition and lighting between the two. A sucessful image relies not just on the individual techniques themselves, but knowing when and where each is best used to solve the unique challenges of a job.
